The Filipino pride Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao was once again successful in his recent match against the African Joshua “The Grand Master” Clottey as they showcased a classic fight last March 13, 2010 at the Cowboy Stadium at Texas. The fight was for the World Boxing Organization Welterweight Belt of the Filipino. Clottey, who was impressive in terms of his defense lost via unanimous decision.
As the fight starts, Manny Pacquaio already began to establish his presence into the ring by throwing power punches at his opponent Joshua Clottey. Joshua Clottey however managed to deflect these bombs using his familiar peak-a-boo style (also termed as turtle guard or high guard). Because of this tight defense, the Pacman tried to focus on hitting the body of Clottey and was doing very god until the end of the fight. Pacquiao managed to connect one right straight in the first round that staggered Clottey a bit. In the following rounds, Clottey tries to throw punches and sometimes connects to the face of his Filipino adversary but Manny Pacquaio was all over Clottey for the whole 12 rounds of boxing. Near the end of the 11th round, Manny Pacquiao finally managed to break the guard of the Clottey and there he rocked him with his lightning fast combinations. In the 4th round of the match, Manny Pacquaio got warning for using his both fists in trying to penetrate the tight guard of the African. Nonetheless, when the hitting match was over and the fight went to the score cards of the three judges, the scores were 120-108, 119-109, and 119-109. That means that in the entire fight, the African only got a lead in just one round and the rest was all for Manny Pacquiao.
Many were expecting that Manny Pacquiao will knock Clottey out but they were wronged. However, the win on what was said to be Pacquiao’s first legitimate fight as a welterweight proves that he has what it takes to move to a higher weight class. In a related manner, when asked about the possibility of the Pacquaio-Mayweather fight, the Filipino champion made a bold statement by saying that he wants that fight. This is a clear issuance of a challenge of the present pound-for-pound king to the former owner of that title. If Floyd Mayweather wins against Shane Mosley, the most talked about fight might as well push through.
